The Philadelphia Flyers today announced the club has signed forward Owen Tippett to an eight-year, $49.6 million contract extension ($6.2 million AAV) starting with the 2024-25 season, according to General Manager Daniel Briere.

Tippett, 24 (2/16/99), owns 30 points (18-12=30) in 46 games this season. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Peterborough, Ontario, leads the Flyers in even-strength goals (16) and shots on goal (167), ranks T-1st in game-winning goals (3), second in goals and is T-3rd in scoring. He skated in his 200th career NHL game on Oct. 28 vs. ANA and tallied his 100th career NHL point on Nov. 15 vs. CAR. The right-shot forward set a career-high four-game goal streak, Nov. 10-18, matched his career-high four-game point streak three times, Oct. 24-30, Nov. 10-18, Dec. 19-28, and tallied a career-high 10 shots on Jan. 15 at STL. He has 86 points (49-37=86), including 11 power-play goals and eight game-winning goals in 144 career games as a Flyer and owns 119 career points (63-56=119), including 13 power-play goals and 10 game-winning goals in 238 contests in five NHL seasons with Florida and Philadelphia (2017-24).

Tippett was acquired by the Flyers on March 19, 2022 from the Florida Panthers along with a third-round selection in the 2023 NHL Draft (95th overall – Denver Barkey) and a first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft in exchange for Claude Giroux, Connor Bunnaman, German Rubstov and a fifth-round selection in the 2024 NHL Draft. He was originally selected by the Panthers in the first round (10th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft.

Halfway through the season, the race for the NHL’s best goal of the year might already be over.

 In the third period of the Philadelphia Flyers’ win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, Flyers winger Owen Tippett scored one of the most impressive goals you’ll ever see.

 After a save by Philadelphia goalie Samuel Ersson sent the puck skittering toward the boards, Tippett collected it and raced toward the other end of the ice. Dallas’s Joel Hanley retreated to deny Tippett a breakaway opportunity, but Tippett pulled off a flawless spin move that gave him just enough separation from Hanley to fire a backhand shot on net.

 It wasn’t just any backhand, shot, either. It zipped right into the upper corner of the net.

 The goal immediately was the talk of the hockey world online with everyone in sheer awe of the skill to pull off the score.

 Tippett, 24, ranks second on the Flyers with 18 goals this season after scoring 27 in 77 games last season. With the win, the Flyers moved within two points of the New York Rangers for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

WD Sports and Entertainment client Owen Tippett scored a goal while leading the Flyers with six shots in Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime win over the Devils.

 Tippett made a nice defensive play to force an offensive-zone turnover before beating Vitek Vanecek with a wrister to give the Flyers a 3-2 victory in overtime.

 It’s Tippett’s third goal and fourth point in his last five games.

 Overall, the 24-year-old winger has 11 goals and 19 points through 31 games this season.

Owen Tippett was selected by his teammates as the Flyers’ most improved player from the previous season. The forward leads the Flyers in power-play goals (7) and shots (224), ranks second in goals (24) and third in points (45) in 75 contests this season. The 24-year-old has set career highs in games played, goals, PPG, assists (21), points, power-play points (10) and shots and tied his career best in game-winning goals (3). He recorded his first career NHL hat trick on March 17 vs. BUF to become the third player in the past 20 years to score a hat trick on St. Patrick’s Day alongside Mike Zibanejad (2021) and Todd Bertuzzi (2003). Tippett was acquired from the Florida Panthers on March 19, 2022 and collected seven points (4-3=7), including a PPG and a GWG in 21 games with Philadelphia. He totaled 21 points (10-11=21), one PPG and one GWG in 63 games during the 2021-22 season with the Panthers and Flyers. This is the first time Tippett has been selected by his teammates for the award.

Tippett scored a pair of goals for the first time in his career during Saturday’s 5-4 shootout loss to the host Canadiens.

Tippett has collected three goals in two games. The 23-year-old right winger utilized Joel Edmundson’s screen to give the Flyers an early 2-0 advantage Saturday with a shot from the right face-off circle. Connecting directly off a faceoff, Tippett’s second-period marker tied the game at 3-3. Tippett, who has collected at least one point in four consecutive contests, contributed a team-high six shots, three blocks and a plus-2 rating in 21:06 of ice time.

Flyers right winger Owen Tippett has always been a player whose appeal lies in his collection of natural abilities. He’s got good size (6-foot-1, 207 pounds) but also is an above-average skater. Although it has not yet manifested itself in consistent NHL production in nearly the same way it did at lower levels, Tippett also possesses a heavy shot and the ability to fire off the puck quickly. 

The first month of Tippett’s 2022-23 regular season was interrupted by a suspected concussion that he sustained late in the first period on opening night against the New Jersey Devils. After missing the rest of the opener and the next four games, Tippett returned for the Oct. 27 game against Florida.

Since his return, Tippett has notched a pair of goals (both on the power play), one assist at 5-on-5, and 10 shots on goal in four games. It’s gratifying to see the points coming for him because the Flyers desperately need scoring sources and also because he’s lacked little for scoring chances in his still-young NHL career but the payoffs have been rather sporadic.

Game by game so far, one can see the 23-year-old winger’s confidence growing. Along with Noah Cates and the already established Joel Farabee, Tippett is one of the few players in the Flyers’ age 25-or-younger segment of the roster in whom head coach John Tortorella has gained a measure of trust. 

Apart from his three points over the last four games, two other aspects of Tippett’s game have been making an impact on the lineup:

Offensive zone entries:Tippett also showed this ability last year, especially on the power play. Flyers assistant coach Rocky Thompson has taken notice of this skill, and it is notable that more entries have been worked of late with Tippett as the player tabbed to bring the puck in over the attacking blueline. At 5-on-5, Tippett has been part of a trio with Cates and Scott Laughton. Late last season, a line of Tippett with Cates and Morgan Frost showed promise over the season’s final 12 games.

Greatly improved defensive play: Even when the Flyers acquired Tippett from Florida last season, he arrived with the reputation of being someone who was average to below-average on the defensive side of the puck. However, with the Flyers, Tippett almost immediately showed that concerns over his off-puck play were overblown. He was not a liability. So far this season, Tippett has bumped up his two-way play another notch to where he’s already made three or four really good plays in backchecking situations. Two have helped foil potential shorthanded scoring chances for opponents.

In anticipation of the upcoming 2022-2023 season the NHL Network has released their list of potential breakout stars for the coming year. Coming off of a fresh two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers – WD Sports and Entertainment client – fans have have lofty expectations for Tippett and the Flyers’ organization under new head coach John Tortorella.

Owen Tippett hasn’t had time for Netflix this off-season. Not with what’s at stake. “I haven’t really been able to start any shows because I’ve just been so busy being back in the gym,” said Tippett with a laugh. “I’m sure there are some new ones out there that I’ll have to check out when I can.”

Though the calendar had just flipped to June, the 23-year-old winger was already in the thick of his off-season training regimen, one created by BioSteel founder and fitness guru Matt Nichol and undertaken alongside several current and future NHLers, as he prepares for the challenges that lie ahead.

It’s unlikely next season will be any more chaotic than the one he just endured. Tippett’s 2021-22 campaign challenged his mental fortitude, shuttling him up and down between two different leagues on three different teams spread across two separate organizations.

In a sport where preparation hinges so heavily on routine, it can sometimes seem impossible to find your footing. Tippett certainly struggled to do so. He had to fight for a spot among arguably the NHL’s most crowded forward corps, and the Florida Panthers’ plethora of offensive talent pushed Tippett further and further down the depth chart as the season wore on. He was in and out of the lineup for large chunks of the schedule before eventually landing in the AHL shortly after the calendar turned to 2022.

For a top-10 draft pick who had thrived at every level he’d reached to that point, it was a tough pill to swallow. And Tippett is the first to admit it. “It can be tough mentally, going up and down, and in and out of the lineup,” he said. “But the biggest thing is that you just have to stay ready. Ready for when your time comes. Obviously, it can be tough mentally, and you lose confidence along the way. And I think I struggled with that a little bit.”

As his role in the only NHL organization he’d ever known hung in the balance, Tippett searched for ways to center himself amidst the chaos, ultimately turning to a one-word mantra: simplify. It applied to everything, both on and off the ice. “If you’re trying to do too much, it’s not going to help,” Tippett said. “For me, just simplifying everything and making sure I was doing what I needed to do to make sure I was playing a good game and then worry about building off of that once I was comfortable with where my game was at.

“That was my biggest thing. Keeping everything simple when things are starting to slide a little bit.”

That approach paid off. Tippett made the most of his time in the AHL, racking up an impressive 18 points in 12 games for the Charlotte Checkers. Things were finally beginning to click.

Then came the trade deadline. And everything changed once again.

Tippett knew his time in the Panthers organization was coming to an end before it officially happened. After being held out of a number of the Checkers’ games in mid-March, the Panthers finally dealt Tippett to Philadelphia two days before the deadline, including him as the centerpiece of the package that netted them Flyers captain Claude Giroux.

In a 20-hour span, Tippett went from driving to the Checkers’ home rink to watch them play at 6 p.m., to hopping on a 9 p.m. flight to Philadelphia, to making his Flyers debut at home at 2 p.m. the next day. He barely had time to introduce himself to his linemates before he found himself in front of a packed house that knew he was just dealt for a franchise icon.

Tippett, ever the optimist, didn’t mind the self-described whirlwind. His instant indoctrination as a Flyer forced all distractions to the periphery, preventing him from over-thinking or over-processing the way his tenure with the Panthers had reached its end. “That’s just how life is sometimes,” he said. “You’ve just got to live on your toes and be ready for anything that comes at you.”

The stability that Tippett searched for this season appears to be far more attainable in 2022-23. With the Flyers, Tippett is now a priority – one whose individual development is of extreme importance to the future of an organization in the midst of a quasi-rebuild. Tippett is no longer the ancillary piece he was in Florida. He will get a regular opportunity as a top-six forward to show off his elite-level shot.

Tippett believes he has the potential to be the player who drew the Flyers to him in the first place. And he’ll stop at nothing to reach it. “I want to go in and be a go-to guy,” he said. “I want to be a steady, everyday player. With the opportunity there, I think it’s a good opportunity for me to come in and prove myself and get a fresh start.”

Only then, it seems, will he allow himself to catch up on his Netflix queue.
