The San Jose Sharks have acquired goalie prospect Eetu Mäkiniemi as part of a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes. Mäkiniemi was drafted 104th overall by the Hurricanes in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
On 1 May 2021, the Carolina Hurricanes signed Mäkiniemi to a two-year entry-level contract. In his first 14 appearances for the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate in Chicago, he posted a sparking 11–2–1 mark with a .922 save percentage and two shutouts, and he yielded two goals or less nine times, including a 41-save performance at Milwaukee on Oct. 22 to earn a 3–2 win in his AHL debut.

In 14 games of action with the Wolves this year, Mäkiniemi went 11-2-1 with a 2.06 GAA and a .922 save percentage. However, an injury in December sidelined him for the duration of the season, and with the emergence of Pyotr Kochetkov, Mäkiniemi fell further down the depth chart https://t.co/JwkBTETLhr
